The Japanese people have always been adept at copying new technologies and enhancing them in the process. The Gun Factory allows you to build Arquebusiers and Musketeers. Musketeers have guns with a faster firing rate and better penetration. Building Gun factories also allows you to reject Christianity without losing access to guns.

Once knowledge of arquebuses was generally available, the daimyo wasted little time in setting up their own craftsmen to make them. The European weapons were perfectly acceptable, of course, but rather expensive after travelling halfway round the world. Within a remarkably short space of time Japanese armourers had mastered all the skills they needed and were producing arquebuses that were as good as anything from abroad.

In Shogun: Total War - Gold Edition a Gun Factory can only be created at the largest of castles.
